JANUARY 2009

1/9: College for Kids (Dayton's Bluff Elementary School)
College for Kids is a chance for local fourth, fifth, and sixth graders to experience a college environment and dream about the future.  Students arrive late in morning, register for classes, and attend two fun classes designed and taught be university students and faculty, and participate in a special graduation ceremony.

1/12: Nellie Stone Johnson Campus Visit
Eight grades from Nellie Stone Johnson will have the chance to experience a college environment and dream about the future when they visit Metropolitan State.  The middle school students arrive in the morning, participate in a scavenger hunt around campus, register for classes, attend a fun class designed and taught by university staff, faculty, and students.

1/13: Teens Know Best Reading Group

Teens Know Best Reading Group is a joint project of Metropolitan State, the Dayton's Bluff Branch of the St. Paul Public Library, and the many teen community members that meet monthly to read and evaluate books.

This is for Metropolitan State staff, alumni and faculty only.

1/23: Kidventure Camp K-6
Kidventure Camp is a program developed by the East Side Learning Collaborative, a group made up of east side organizations providing youth programming during "out of school" days as part of Mayor Coleman's education initiatives.
Time: 8:00am- 5:00pm                         Location: St. Paul Campus

1/28: Project SHINE Orientation
The SHINE orientaion will go over expectations and specifics for the SHINE student tutors and three hours of ESL and Citizenship tutor training by the Minnesota Literacy Council. It is open to students particating in Project SHINE.

2/7:  East Side Listening Session
The East Side Listening Session is an opportunity for youth from the East Side youth to share their perspective on the neighborhood, their schools and their ideas for change. It is organized by Youth Voice, a project sponsored by the Dayton's Bluff Urban Collaborative, of which Metro State is a member. The event is open to youth (14 through 20) who live on the East Side. Interested adults may also attend. 3/25: New PeaceJam Mentor Training
PeaceJam is a great opportunity for university students to work with high school kids and provide guidance while exploring peace and justice topics! University students are paired up and work with groups of youth throughout PeacJam weekend (March 28 & 29) and will also have the opportunity to meet Adolfe Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Laureate and Human Rights activist (and very talented artist!). Training is provided and the entire commitment (training and PeaceJam weekend) is approximately 26-30 hours total.

3/27: Presidential Lecture Series / PeaceJam
Adolfo Pérez Esquivel of Argentina is the keynote speaker at Metropolitan State's 2009 President's Lecture Series on Friday, March 27, at 7 p.m. at the Saint Paul Campus, Founders Hall, Auditorium. The mission of PeaceJam is to create a new generation of young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the world though the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates. This year's PeaceJam is hosted by Metropolitan State Univeristy in partnership with Neighborhood House and youthrive.

Metropolitan State University and the Community Design Center of Minnesota work with Dayton's Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary School throughout the year to develop and implement spring activities for National Youth Services Day and Earth Day. University students and staff are invited to participate in these activities.

St. Paul and Minneapolis Get Ready! Graduates students that are currently in 6th-8th grade have the opportunity to participate in a one week program that focuses on career and educational options and as well as fun interactive classes! Students also participate in off campus service-learning projects and field trips. All classes and workshops provide university students with teaching and teaching assistant opportunities.

The YMCA Muticultural Achievers is a High School and Junior High School program that helps African American, Hispanic and Latino students set and obtain high educational and career goals. Students participate in team building, leadership skill development, and increasing academic achievement. Youth focus on goal setting, preparing for High School, exploring post secondary options, college tours, and cultural enrichment to assist in preparation for after high school and success in their secondary program.
