Nancy Walter, Psyc Club President

Nancy Walter is a senior majoring in Psychology at Metro State University and will be graduating in the spring of 2011. As President, Nancy hopes to foster the Club’s visibility and professional reputation on all three campuses. One of her goals this year is to promote psychology research opportunities on campus, educate students on furthering their academic pursuits in the field of psychology, and introduce students to how the Club can be relevant and beneficial to each individual student at Metro State regardless of their major/minor. In addition to being a student, Nancy works in the Psychology Lab as a student worker and volunteers at a local hospital delivering communion and conducting medical program research.
“It is a strong desire of mine to show students how the field of research in psychology need not be an intimidating area for students”

Trish Greene, Psyc Club Treasurer

I am a senior majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, graduating spring of 2011. I will continue to graduate school, ideally to complete my PhD in Social Psychology.  My strongest interests lie in research and teaching. I am a full time student at Metro and Psychology is my second and chosen career after a serendipitous 20 years of working in broadcast and print as a project manager in Advertising/Design. When I am not studying I enjoy spending time with my son, friends and family, and pursuing hobbies:  reading, writing, photography, gardening and cooking.

Secretary:
Theresa Skaar

Theresa Skaar, Pscy Club Secretary

I am majoring in Psychology and will be graduating in the spring of 2011. I will then continue on to graduate school. My ideal career path will have me working with the elderly their communities and families.
I am a full time student returning to school after being laid off last year. I am so thankful to have this opportunity to finally finish my B.A. and to experience learning as a “mature” student. 
When I am not studying I enjoy spending time with my husband, my dogs, friends and family. We love going for bike rides, walks and cooking together. For ‘me’ time I have discovered the joys of knitting and have always loved reading for pleasure – mostly fiction – books that I like to call “mind candy”.

August Hoffman

August John Hoffman is currently a professor of psychology at Metropolitan State University. He earned his B.A. from UC Santa Barbara, M.A. from Radford University in Clinical Psychology (with an emphasis in Sport Psychology), and Ph.D. from UCLA in educational psychology. As a former professor of psychology at Compton College, CSU Northridge, and Pepperdine University, he has assisted students from various educational backgrounds in accomplishing their goals. He began and developed a highly successful gardening program at Compton College in an effort to help students improve their campus and community. Current research interests include community service work and student mentoring as effective methods to reduce ethnic conflict and improve self-efficacy among community college students. For the last five years Dr. Hoffman has conducted research on the Compton campus with outdoor gardening work with community college students and CSUN mentors, and the results have been very positive. We have seen significant increases in the transition to higher education directly as a result of our community service and gardening work. Additionally, Dr. Hoffman has taught several psychology courses including Motivation and Sport Psychology, which include an applied approach to creating healthy lifestyles for his students. He has published several books and academic research articles, including the texts, Unity Through Community Service Activities; Understanding Sport Psychology and Human Behavior; and, Stop Procrastinating Now!. He enjoys gardening at his home in Hudson, Wisconsin during his time off with his family – Nancy his wife, and two children A.J. and Sara.
