Equity Champions are specially trained individuals to serve on search committees. Equity Champions …

  • offer guidance, facilitation, and feedback to search committee chairs and committee members
  • ensure that search processes are equitable for all candidates
  • are committed to advancing their skills at addressing bias in the search process (recruitment and hiring)
  • advocate for equity and inclusion during the search process
  • work ensures more candidates of protected classes are successful during faculty searches

What Equity Champions do not do

Equity Champions …

  • don’t serve as compliance officers (the role is relational)
  • don’t play a monitoring role in the search process
  • don’t vote on search committee recommendations
  • may be from a different discipline/college

Becoming an Equity Champion

Employees who are interested in becoming an Equity Champion should provide a letter of application to include:

  • A statement of their commitment to diversity and equity
  • An explanation of their interest in serving
  • Information about any relevant training or experiences applicable to this role
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor or dean
  • Individuals must have completed all employee required training at the time of application
