Library Student Worker

    Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 4pm-8pm; and Saturdays 1pm-6pm. Additional hours may be available.
  • Pay Level C
    $14.50 starting wage

Major job duties

  • Provide an advanced level of customer service at the library circulation and information desk
  • Check materials in and out, and perform other functions using the integrated library system and other tools
  • Assist staff with cleaning and maintaining computers and other equipment
  • Assist staff in supporting students with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and peripherals including printers and scanners
  • Explain library policies and refer library patrons to a reference librarian for research questions
  • Answer phones, direct calls, take messages and make calls as needed
  • Scan articles or chapters submitted for electronic reserves
  • Search online journals, databases, and library catalogs as needed for library projects
  • Make IDs and activate patrons in library database
  • Photocopy library forms
  • Shelve returned books in call number order
  • Assist with general office duties

Qualifications and experience

  • Exceptional customer service skills, a high level of situational awareness, and experience serving others in a culturally and economically diverse setting
  • Above average computers skills sufficient for using library circulation software and for supporting staff in assisting patrons with questions about applications used in the library computer lab, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, D2L, web browsers, etc
  • Sufficient familiarity with the University Website, departments and buildings to provide accurate guidance to patrons in person and by phone
  • Ability to oversee the circulation desk or Information Commons in absence of library staff
  • Understanding of library databases, catalogs, online research tools, and academic library policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress classification system
  • Ability to respect patron’s privacy and maintain appropriate confidentiality
  • Able to perform detailed tasks accurately
  • Willingness to perform new skills that may be required to complete certain tasks
