BIOL 430 Virology
This course will explore and provide an in-depth account of current concepts in the field of Virology. It will introduce students to topics such as virus structure, replication, infection and disease, epidemiology and immunology. There will be a detailed discussion of renown viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, flu viruses, HIV I. Students will also be introduced to modern use of viruses (ex.Therapy for diseases and vaccine making). This course befits student in Biology and Biochemistry majors.
First day attendance is mandatory.

General
- Model general virus structure, genome, and life cycle and the differences that exist between viruses.
- Differentiate the mechanisms of virus host interactions that results in disease.
- Predict barriers to infection by the host immune system and the mechanisms viruses employ to get through these barriers.
- Critically analyze scientific literature in virology and related subjects.
- Apply virology concepts in designing modern technologies for therapy and vaccine developments.
- Explore historical and current societal myths and misunderstandings of viruses and viral diseases including their role in perpetuating inequalities, racism and social injustice.
