HIST 001A Study Abroad Workshop

Join us for a series of in-person pre-departure sessions designed to prepare you for your Summer 2025 study abroad experience. These sessions will cover essential topics such as health and safety, cultural adjustment, logistics, academic preparation, documentation, financial planning, and communication. We will also preview materials from the required textbooks to help you get a head start academically. Our goal is to make sure you are well-equipped and confident as you embark on this exciting journey.

Note: This workshop course is designed to ensure the timely disbursement of financial aid and scholarships for the upcoming study abroad program. We will hold pre-departure information sessions during the semester when the workshop course is scheduled. Special permission is required for registration.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Students will identify necessary health precautions and understand emergency procedures for their destination.
  • Students will describe the cultural norms and social expectations of the host country and develop strategies to manage culture shock and homesickness.
  • Students will organize and coordinate some travel arrangements and ensure they have all necessary travel documents.
  • Students will explain academic expectations and course materials for their time abroad.
  • Students will demonstrate effective ways to stay connected with the faculty leader, teaching assistant, local coordinator, classmates, and family, including using Wi-Fi-enabled devices, cell phones, and communication apps.
