HMNG 104 HMong Worldview Through Language
This course introduces students to HMong language study to deepen understanding of HMong worldviews and diaspora. Students will learn and practice HMong language, including both White and Green HMong, by studying relevant sociocultural contexts of the past and present. Students will learn to engage in
introductory conversations, through listening and speaking, as they learn about HMong culture, such as the clan system, spirituality/cosmology, textiles, music, and oral storytelling. Using a revitalization approach to teaching HMong language, students will engage in project based learning and cultural knowledge building
that includes experiential, communal, and intergenerational engagement.

Learning outcomes
General
- Use basic introductory information and some other familiar topics in HMong that have been practiced using single words or memorized phrases.
- Discuss the connections between HMong language and the complexities of HMong culture, including critical attention to dialects (namely Green and White HMong), cultural practices, especially expressive culture.
- Connect language to the variety of art and humanistic endeavors tied to HMong cultural practices, including but not limited to social systems, agriculture, kinship structure, spirituality, textiles, song, and storytelling in both local and global contexts
- Demonstrate the connection between cultural, ethnic, and linguistic perspectives of HMong language and culture in writing and discussion.
- Engage in community-based research of the HMong language and culture through collective learning approaches, including intergenerational learning
