HMNG 105 HMong Worldview Through Language II

This is the second course of a sequence that builds upon an introductory understanding of HMong worldviews and diaspora through language. Using a revitalization approach to teaching HMong language, students will engage in project based learning and cultural knowledge building that includes experiential, communal, and intergenerational engagement to develop their introductory communication skills, grammar and cultural knowledge. Students will learn and practice reading and writing in the (RPA) Romanized Popular Alphabet, the writing system used in both White and Green Hmong dialects, at an introductory and early intermediate level. This will involve studying relevant sociocultural contexts of the past and present. Students will continue to engage in introductory conversations, through listening and speaking, and add early intermediate vocabulary as they learn about HMong culture, including the clan system, spirituality/cosmology, textiles, music, and oral storytelling. Students may request placement in this course with instructor permission.
