MLS 001A Study Abroad Workshop Pre-Departure Information Sessions

This is a series of in-person pre-departure sessions designed to prepare you for your Summer study abroad experience. These sessions will cover essential topics such as health and safety, cultural adjustment, logistics, academic preparation, documentation, financial planning, and communication. We will also preview materials from the required textbooks and readings to help you get a head start academically.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Students will identify necessary health and safety precautions and understand emergency procedures for their destination.
  • Students will describe the cultural norms, cultural protocols, and social expectations of the host country and develop strategies to manage culture shock and homesickness.
  • Students will organize and coordinate some travel arrangements and ensure they have all necessary travel documents, fill out necessary pre-departure paperwork, and learn about monetary exchange rates.
  • Students will understand academic expectations, self-reflection approaches, and course materials for their time abroad.
  • Students will demonstrate effective ways to stay connected with the faculty leader, teaching assistant, local coordinator, classmates, and family, including using Wi-Fi-enabled devices, cell phones, and communication apps.
