SOWK 564 Urban School Social Work Practice
The goal of this course is to develop culturally responsive school social workers who are prepared to respond to the unique gifts and needs of students in urban schools. The course involves an introduction to the role of the school social worker and the application of the skills and practices necessary for social work practice with students in urban schools. Students in the course will develop the ethics, knowledge, competencies, practice behaviors, and skills necessary for successful and competent practice with students, teachers, families, schools, and communities. Participants in this course can expect to develop an understanding of current practice trends and evidence-based multi-tiered systems of support in urban schools. There will be particular emphasis on how to integrate social work models and theories, including, ecological frameworks, the strengths perspective, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed practices. Special attention is given to practice with diverse children, including children affected by poverty, gender issues, sexual orientation and/or racial or ethnic minority status.

- Develop and apply knowledge and functional skills necessary for practice as a special education social worker including individualized education plans and functional behavioral assessments.
