SPED 302 Legal, Political, Ethical Issues in Special Education
Students in this course will examine and discuss the legal aspects of special education law, litigation, and ethics of professional practice in special education. In addition, the course will use an antiracist lens when discussing how provisions in the legislation and litigation affect the identification, eligibility determination, planning, programming, and instruction of urban students with disabilities.
Note: Formerly known as SPED 360. Prerequisites: Admission to the School of Urban Education and EDU 200, EDU 203, SPED 300. With Instructor's permission, the course may be taken concurrently with SPED 350. This course is offered concurrently with SPED 602.

Learning outcomes
General
- Explain the particular laws and litigation that support urban students with disabilities.
- Describe student rights and teacher responsibilities to equal and appropriate education for urban students with disabilities (e.g., confidentiality, privacy, appropriate treatment of students, and reporting situations of known or suspected abuse or neglect).
- Critique the due process, procedural safeguards, and ethical requirements of the referral, evaluation, planning, and programming processes of special education.
- Examine the child find requirements during universal screening and early intervening efforts.
- Assist urban children, youth, and families in understanding terminology and identifying concerns, priorities, and resources during the identification of a disability and at critical transition points across the lifespan
