THEA 120 Introduction to Acting

This foundational course introduces students to the basics of acting. Students will learn fundamental techniques in voice, movement, and character development through practical exercises, improvisation, and scene work. The course covers script analysis, stage presence, and collaborative performance skills. Designed for beginners, this class provides a supportive environment to explore acting essentials and build confidence in performance. No prior experience required.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Demonstrate basic stage presence and confidence through exercises in body awareness, relaxation techniques, and focus.
  • Apply fundamental vocal techniques, including proper breathing, articulation, and projection, to deliver clear and expressive dialogue.
  • Develop and portray simple characters by identifying objectives, tactics, and obstacles within short scenes or monologues.
  • Engage in basic improvisation exercises to enhance spontaneity, listening skills, and character development.
  • Analyze short scripts to identify key elements such as given circumstances, relationships, and basic character motivations.
