The Currency of Beauty

“The Currency of Beauty” is a solo show featuring the paintings of Wisconsin artist Lizzie Wortham.

Paintings of beautiful young women are nothing new. Men have been painting alluring women in the bloom of youth for as long as there has been canvas and brushes. What is unique about Wortham’s paintings of young women (most of whom were born female), is that the source material is composed by the subjects.

Wortham’s recent work focuses on representations of young women on the path to discovering their own identities. For this exhibition, Wortham respectfully asked young women within her children’s circle of friends to allow her to use their “selfies” as source material.
