Did you know that the sun is so large that 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it?!
Youth scientists are invited to join the First Saturday Science team as we explore the science of astronomy, the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole.
Join us on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/c/MetroStateICES for this hourlong live-streamed event. These monthly sessions are free and open to the public. Ideal for ages 6 to 12 years.
For this month’s fun laboratory activity, the team will demonstrate how to make a glowing “star-in-a-jar!” To follow along at home, you’ll need:
- 1 clear jar (two to 12 ounces) with a lid that secures to be water tight
- 1 fluorescent yellow highlighter
- 1 ultraviolet “black light” flashlight (see Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, etc)
- some tap water
To receive additional content on the first Saturday of each month, please join the FSS email list by contacting FSS Coordinator Alyssia Bell at alyssia.bell@my.metrostate.edu. February's supplemental videos will feature how to build your very own telescope at home, just like pioneering American astronomer Vera Rubin, our highlighted scientist of the month.
Co-sponsored by Metropolitan State University's College of Sciences and the Institute for Community Engagement and Scholarship (ICES). For further information, please contact ICES at community.engagement@metrostate.edu.
