Youth tutor volunteer opportunities with Karen Organization of Minnesota

Posted September 12, 2018

The Karen Organization of Minnesota leads after school programs at Humboldt and Harding high schools in Saint Paul to provide academic, cultural and social support for Karen youth who have been in the U.S. less than five years. Each Tuesdays and Thursdays, volunteers focus on academic support by providing homework help for students.

KOM's mission is to enhance the quality of life for Karen and other refugees from Burma in Minnesota by assisting refugees to settle, integrate and become increasingly self-sufficient while fostering cultural knowledge and understanding.

Key responsibilities include:
• Help high school students with homework one-on-one or in small groups
• Assist the KOM Youth Coordinator with monitoring the students (making sure they are on task or have completed their homework)

Time commitment: Tutor during after school program 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Program begins in October.

Location: Humboldt High School and Harding High School.

Qualifications: Patience, flexibility and self-motivation in college students or adults who are passionate to tutor high school students with limited English proficiency.

Benefits: The tutor has the opportunity to grow their tutoring skills for students with limited English proficiency and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills.

How to apply: Complete KOM’s volunteer application online (https://www.mnkaren.org/volunteer/) or contact Suzanne Olive to receive a paper application. Volunteers will complete an interview to discuss their interest in tutoring and be subject to a background check. The volunteer will be connected with the youth coordinator who leads the after school program. Other logistics and requirements of Saint Paul Public Schools (such as checking in at the school’s main office upon entering and exiting the school) will be discussed during the interview.
