WINGS Program Workshops

In addition to participation in the modules, participants will develop and implement a service project that incorporates information learn in the workshops. At the conclusion of all workshops and service projects, participants will present their work and how it applies to what they have learned.

Peer mentorship

The Peer Mentorship workshop will focus on benefits of peer mentorship, including providing information, social support, and general guidance to student participants as they aim to successfully succeed in achieving their academic goals.

Participants will also learn about ways to increase self-awareness, enhance personal and professional growth, and improve communication and leadership skills.

1. Participants will learn what peer mentoring is.

2. Participants will learn about appropriate professional conduct while serving as a peer mentor.

3. Participants will be introduced to leadership principles.

4. Participants will begin to establish connections with fellow students and the MAIR Team members.

Social Emotional Learning

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) workshop will help participants with social emotional Skill building efforts to increase Self Awareness, Academic Achievement, and Positive Behavior in and outside the classroom.

Participants will learn about Five Core Competencies of Social Emotional Learning.

Participants will set goals and work actively to achieve heir goals by the end of the workshop.

1. Participants will share what they know about SEL.

2. Participants will learn about Five Core Competencies of Social Emotional learning.

3. Participants will set goals and work to achieve the goals throughout the workshop through completion of a variety of exercises.

4. Participants will learn the value of journaling to check-in on their own emotional needs and status.

5. Participants will learn how developing their social emotional learning will improve their leadership skills.

Identity Exploration

The Identity Exploration workshop will help participants explore their identity, while teaching and learning about others. Multiple categories of identify will be explored. This workshop is designed to help participants with cultural responsiveness, determining deeper understanding of their own identities and becoming great allies to cultures outside of their own.

This will be a safe and confidential space for participants.

1. Using grounding exercises, course materials and other tools, participants will explore their understanding of their own identities.

2. With use of provided materials, participants will explore their own biases and how they impact them and others.

3. Participants will learn how to apply these concepts to their daily life.

4. Participants will learn how deeper identity exploration will improve their leadership skills.

Post-Graduation and Financial Literacy

The Post-Graduation and Financial Literacy workshop will cover the basics of professional readiness, career competencies, and expected skills to be successful after graduation. Students will understand how to articulate their professional goals, as well as their financial status and budgeting needs to prepare for post-graduation life.

1. Participants will review the fundamentals of financial management and be able to identify their financial status, goals, and create a clear idea of their budget moving forward.

2. Participants will explore and be able to articulate career goals and the steps they can take to get there.

3. Participants will practice verbal and interpersonal communication skills necessary to success in interviews and networking opportunities.

4. Participants will practice written communication skills necessary to success for resumes and cover letters.

5. Participants will understand and be able to access mini credentials, badging, and certificates, and they will be able to articulate how to leverage them for professional development.

Scholarship Awareness

The Scholarship Awareness workshop will provide participants with tools to search for scholarships as well as guidance on application completion, essays and more.

1. Participants will receive detailed information about scholarships that are available to them.

2. Participants will learn how to search for and apply for additional scholarships.

3. Participants will receive guidance on scholarship application and essay writing.

Community Service/Service

The Community Service workshop will provide participants an opportunity to learn about different types of learning service projects They will also identify their own service projects and prepare a presentation to address how their service project incorporated what they learned in the other modules.

1. Participants will learn about different types of service projects.

2. Participants will learn about why it’s important to contribute to society.

3. Participants will learn about how other schools have contributed to the community through service projects.

4. By the end of the spring semester, participants will implement a service project and will prepare a group presentation on the their service project. The presentation will include application of the information learned in modules.
