Veteran Services

Metro State University welcomes its veteran and military students and appreciates their service. We are honored to assist veterans, active and reserve military, and their dependents and families throughout their academic journey, and are a proud Beyond the Yellow Ribbon institution.

You can find us at the Veterans and Military Student Center, a dedicated space offering our veterans and military connected students a place to take a break, study, meet and socialize with other veteran and military students, as well as access resources. The center is staffed by the Veterans and Military Student Services coordinator and knowledgeable student workers, and it often hosts service providers from the VA and other veteran organizations. The coordinator and student workers can help you apply for your benefits, retrieve military transcripts, figure out which benefits are best for you, set academic and career goals, and access the priority course registration available to all veterans, service members, and eligible family members.

Located in Founders Hall, Room 201, on the Saint Paul Campus, the large lounge allows for students to decompress in-between classes, grab a free snack or heat up a quick meal in our kitchenette, access resources, and meet other military connected students.

Next steps for veteran students

Here are the steps you should take to make sure that your benefits application and required documentation are in place for next semester.

Whether you are currently serving or separated from the service, you may be eligible for certain education benefits. Education benefits will vary depending on your branch of service, length and type of service, and current military status. Some examples of military education benefits are the GI Bill®, Federal Tuition Assistance, State Tuition Assistance and MN GI Bill®.

It is also recommended that all students complete a FAFSA for possible additional financial aid. Federal Tuition Assistance and State Tuition Reimbursement are branch-specific benefits. The MN GI Bill® is based on financial need. FAFSA can be used in conjunction with your military education benefits.

Eligibility for multiple chapters of the GI Bill® are dependent on individual circumstances.

While you are the only person who can choose which program meets your needs, meeting with Higher Education Veterans Program Regional Coordinator Duane Bauer ll, duane.bauer@state.mn.us or 612.310.0492, can help you to better understand your options.

Education benefit programs

If you are planning to use education benefits, such as the MN GI Bill® and/or the Federal Tuition Assistance program, make sure you apply before the semester starts. To complete your benefit application, you will need the following information:

  • Permanent Address
  • SSN for yourself and the military member(s)
  • Dates of Service
  • High School Information
  • Previous College Information
  • Metro State University Information (Address)
  • Banking account and routing number for your benefits funds to be direct deposited

Minnesota Gi Bill®

To receive the MN GI Bill®, you must meet eligibility requirements such as being a Minnesota resident and attending an institution within the state. The Metro State University Financial Aid Office will assess your application and determine the funding amount you can receive each term.

Any amount of aid you receive through other programs, such as the Pell Grant, state grants, and federal military or veterans’ education benefits will be factored in when calculating your MN GI Bill® award. Your award amount is based on whether you are enrolled as a full-time or part-time student.

Each academic year, you can receive up to $5,000, with a lifetime maximum of $15,000.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs will verify your eligibility and you may be contacted to provide additional documentation such as your DD214 or other discharge documents.

Metro State University Financial Aid Office uses the FAFSA to determine your aid award amounts and will notify you if you qualify.

You must apply for this benefit every year, and retroactive awards are not allowed. If you want to use the MN GI Bill® to pay for courses in a given semester, you have to apply before that semester ends.

You can currently be taking courses and then apply for the MN GI Bill® to pay the costs as long as you do so before the semester ends, however, it’s best to submit your application before classes begin.

If you have questions, you can email VeteranEdBenefit@metrostate.edu for help.

Federal Tuition Assistance

The Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) Program funding is maxed out at $250 per semester credit hour or $4,000 per year to cover up to 16 credits.

Nearly all active duty, Reserve, and Guard members are eligible for FTA. However, each service branch determines eligibility which can limit access to this program.

State tuition reimbursement

Students serving in the Minnesota National Guard can receive state tuition reimbursement in addition to federal benefits through the Minnesota State Reimbursement program.

Application processes and maximum funds awarded vary from state to state. For details on other states' benefits, contact your unit for more information.

After you’ve submitted your benefit application, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in the mail about 30 days later. Your COE will have details about your benefits including:

  • How many months the benefits cover
  • What percentage of the benefits you are eligible for
  • How long you have to use the benefits

You will need to email a copy to the Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official before the semester. The Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official can be reached at VeteranEdBenefit@metrostate.edu or call 651.793.1225 for questions about how to submit this documentation.

Submit verification form

To receive benefits in any given semester, you must verify your enrollment each term by submitting your enrollment verification form.

If you have never received VA benefits from Metro State University, please send a copy of your certificate of eligibility to VeteranEdBenefit@metrostate.edu or call 651.793.1225 for questions about how to submit this documentation.

Monthly housing allowance (MHA)

Please refer to the Veterans Affairs webpage for questions referring to your monthly housing allowance, should you qualify for one. Note: Active-duty service members and their spouses aren't eligible for MHA. Metro State University does not have access to this information. If you have questions, please contact 888.442.4551. Hours of operation: 7 a.m.–6 p.m. CT, Monday–Friday.

Note: If you take at least one class in person or hybrid while taking other online learning classes, you may be eligible for the higher resident MHA. Please refer to the link below for more information.

Whenever you add or drop classes, you have to submit the Schedule Changes Form to notify Veterans Affairs that your credit status has changed. This also applies if you decide to take courses during summer sessions.

Metro State financial aid

In addition to military education benefits, you can apply for financial aid from Metro State University and the government.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the main step you take to apply for financial aid. Complete the FAFSA starting October 1— the earlier the better!—and before May 15.

Total and permanent disability discharge

If you’re totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify for a discharge of your federal student loans and/or Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant service obligation.

Scholarships

You can also apply for a variety of scholarships. Explore all your options for financial aid and make a plan for how you’ll pay for college.
