DSCI 421 Project Planning and Budgeting

This course is designed to master project management in the areas of project selection, budgeting, and risk management, utizing quantitative techniquest and analytical tools. Topics covered include a review of principles of project management, different types of projects, project valuations technique, and risk assessment. Students will use Microsoft Project, Earned Value Analysis (EVA) and simulations.

Note: For those students without prior experience in project management, it is recommended to take DSci 420 Project Management before taking this course.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Describe the differences between traditional (waterfall) and adaptive (agile) project management methodologies and apply them appropriately to different project environments.
  • Apply value analysis and outcomes analysis techniques to guide project selection and prioritization, ensuring a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Demonstrate competency in using quantitative tools and techniques for managing different project types, such as product design, performance improvement, and software development.
  • Identify, describe, and apply the principles of project budgeting, including cost estimation, allocation, and control, as well as risk management strategies to mitigate project uncertainties.
  • Develop leadership competencies of influencing, facilitation, and change management while managing complex projects using project management tools, including Microsoft Project, Kanban, and simulations, to guide teams toward project success.
