STEM Optional Practical Training extension
The STEM OPT Extension is a 24-month period of temporary training that directly relates to an F-1 student's program of study in an approved STEM field. All fields of study in the core STEM areas of engineering, biological sciences, mathematics and physical sciences are included.
The list of STEM fields that qualify for a STEM OPT Extension is known as the STEM Designated Degree Program list and is available at Study in the States. A STEM field is a field included in the U.S. Department of Education's Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) taxonomy within the two-digit series containing engineering (CIP code 14), biological sciences (CIP code 26), mathematics (CIP code 27) and physical sciences (CIP code 40), or a related field.
To qualify, the CIP code associated with your major, as shown on page 1 of your I-20 under Program of Study, must be included on this STEM Designated Degree Program list.
A list of Metro State STEM OPT eligible majors can be viewed here. While we update this list frequently, it is not exhaustive. It should be used as a tool only for STEM OPT exploration.
Authorization for STEM OPT Extension is granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and can take 90 days to obtain. It is important that students apply for the authorization at the earliest possible date through International Student Services.
