I-20 Program Extension

International students are admitted to the U.S. for "duration of status" (D/S) to complete their educational program. However, the student must actually complete their program before the program end date indicated in SEVIS (this is annotated on the student’s I-20). A student who will not complete their academic program by that date must apply for an I-20 extension before their I-20 program end date.

An international student who is unable to complete their educational program by their I-20 program end date and who is ineligible for program extension is considered out of status. If eligible, the student may then be eligible to apply to USCIS for reinstatement.

An international student who fails to apply an extension before their I-20 program end date is considered out of status and is not eligible for an extension. If eligible, the student may then be eligible to apply for reinstatement or must exit the U.S. and apply for admission with a new SEVIS ID and I-20 issued for initial attendance.

Reasons for an I-20 Program Extension may be:

  • Compelling Academic Reason
    • Change of major
    • Change of research topic
    • Unexpected research problems
  • Medical Reason
    • Documented Illness
  • Inadequate time granted on initial I-20

Program extension eligibility requirements

In order to apply for the extension, students must:

  • Apply prior to their program end date listed in SEVIS (on their I-20)
  • Have continuously maintained their F-1 status
  • Certify the reason for the delay in completion is "caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as changes of major or research topics, unexpected research problems, or documented illnesses" (delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension)
  • Not be applying simply to extend CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
  • Be able to submit proof of sufficient funds to successfully study in the U.S. the duration of their program

When to apply

Students must apply prior to the end date listed in SEVIS (on their I-20).

I-20 program extension application steps

In order to apply, students are required to submit the following:

  1. I-20 Program Extension Request Form (which includes the Program Completion Plan)
  2. A written statement from the student’s academic advisor describing the circumstances for the program extension request
  3. Financial documentation
    1. International students are responsible for all educational and personal expenses for the duration of their F-1 status at Metro State. To extend an I-20, which is needed to obtain an F-1 student visa, Metro State is required by the U.S. government to maintain records that you have the funds necessary to cover your tuition, fees, and living expenses for at least your first year of study. If your spouse or other dependents are with you in the U.S. you must also demonstrate that you have the funds necessary to cover those costs.
    2. Proof of Financial Responsibility
    3. Source of Funds
      1. Bank statements must be originals, photocopies, scanned copies, or faxed documents printed on bank letterhead and certified with the bank’s stamp or seal. We reserve the right to verify authenticity.
      2. Bank statements must be dated within 6 months from the application date.
      3. If English is not the language in which the bank documents are issued, the bank documents must be accompanied by a certified, literal English translation.
    4. Financial Letter of Support
      1. Use this template for non-U.S. citizen/permanent resident, written in English, indicating their willingness to support your financial obligations.
    5. Affidavit of Support
      1. Complete this form if your financial sponsor is a U.S. citizen/permanent resident.
