Transfer of SEVIS Record
An international student’s SEVIS record can be transferred from one SEVP-certified school to another.
This typically happens at the end of a student’s program of study, end of OPT employment, or end of STEM Extension employment; however, a student can transfer while they are still completing their degree at Metro State.
When a student transfers their SEVIS record from Metro State to a different institution and the student is in “Active” status, the student does not require a new SEVIS record and will not need to pay a new I-901 SEVIS fee. The student’s current SEVIS record is simply transferred from one institution to the next.
- End of program, end of OPT employment, or end of STEM Extension employment transfer
- The SEVIS record must be transferred within the student’s 60-day grace period following their end of program date or employment end date
- The student must begin their new program of study within 5 months from the student’s end of program date or employment end date
- Mid-program transfer
- The SEVIS record may be transferred after the end of the student’s current term of study
- The student must begin their new program of study within 5 months from the last day of the student’s last term of study
If a student is not in “Active” status and does not intend on leaving the U.S. before transferring to another SEVP-certified school the student does not require a new SEVIS record. If the student has been out of “Active” status for more than 5 months, the student will need to pay a new I-901 SEVIS fee. The student’s new institution will need to request “Reinstatement” of the student’s SEVIS record.
If a student is not in “Active” status and intends on leaving the U.S. before transferring to another SEVP-certified school, the student will require a new SEVIS record and will need to pay a new I-901 SEVIS fee. If the student’s F-1 visa is valid the student will not need to apply for a new F-1 visa outside of the U.S. Therefore, it is recommended to transfer a SEVIS record prior to leaving the U.S.
In order to request the transfer of their SEVIS record, students must:
- Be able to submit proof of acceptance to the SEVP-certified school
- Select the date of which the SEVIS record should be transferred
- Students should apply for the transfer of their SEVIS record prior to the end of the semester to ensure timely processing.
- Students completing their program, ending OPT employment, or ending STEM Extension employment must apply prior to the end of their 60-day grace period.
Submit the following to International Student Services:
- Transfer of SEVIS Record Request Form
- Proof of acceptance to the SEVP-certified school
- Transfer out survey
Once a SEVIS record has been transferred from Metro State to another SEVP-certified school any employment (on-campus, CPT, OPT, or STEM Extension) ends the date the record is transferred.
After the record is transferred, Metro State no longer has any access to the student’s SEVIS record.
If a student’s plans change and the student no longer wishes to transfer to another SEVP-certified school the student will need to obtain the assistance of the other school. A transfer reversal is not possible after a SEVIS record has been transferred.
The student’s new SEVP-certified school will issue a “Transfer Pending” I-20 to the student. Students are required to check-in with their new International Student office within 15 days from the beginning of the new term.
The Transfer of SEVIS record process only addresses transferring a SEVIS record from Metro State to a new SEVP-certified school. If the student has not completed their academic program, it is recommended that the student discuss their decision with their academic advisor for any other steps to take before leaving your program at Metro State.
All financial obligations to Metro State must be complete prior to transferring a SEVIS record to a new SEVP-certified school.
