International student orientation

Every semester, International Student Services provides an International Student Orientation to welcome newly admitted international students. The orientation covers information that directly affects you as an international student, such as requirements for work authorization, traveling, health insurance, program extension, and tuition. You will meet the ISS staff and review some important guidelines as they pertain to maintaining your F-1 student status.

During the orientation you will learn about some of the many other services offered at Metro State and have the opportunity to meet other international students. International student orientation provides essential information to assist new international students make a successful cultural and academic transition into their new settings. International student orientation is required for all new Metro State international students (both new to the U.S. and transfer students).

International Student Arrival Checklist

  • Attend International Student Orientation

    International Student Orientation is mandatory for your first semester at Metro State.

    The U.S. government requires all international students in F-1 status to report their arrival to their schools.

    All new and transfer international students are required to check-in through the International Student Services office. International Student Check-In is a federally mandated process that requires every international student to report to ISS and submit their immigration documents for review. Check-In should be completed as soon as possible AFTER arrival to the U.S. or within 15 days for transfer students.

    Students are required to complete the International Student Check-In Form completely and email to Kristy.nelsonramos@metrostate.edu

  • Upload immigration documents

    After a student has submitted their International Student Check-In Form, they must upload their immigration documents. (I-20, passport biographic page, and F-1 visa stamp)

  • Submit a immunization form

    All students are required to complete a Metro State University Student Immunization Record Form. Your student immunization record needs to be submitted within the first 45 days of your first semester or you cannot remain enrolled.

  • Take placement assessments

    Placement results provide important insights into students' skill levels in math, reading, and writing. Students and their advisors use the information to select or recommend those courses most suited to students' academic needs.

  • Register for classes
    • Undergraduate students are required to be enrolled in at least 12 credits (only 3 of these credits can be online).
    • Graduate students are required to be enrolled in at least 8 credits (only 4 of these credits can be online).
  • Buy your books
  • Pay for International Student health insurance

    All international students are required to purchase the Minnesota State colleges and universities approved health insurance plan.

  • Pay tuition in full or set up a payment plan

    Tuition and fees for all registered classes must be paid by tuition due dates.

  • Enter local Minnesota address in eServices

    (please verify your address on usps.com and type it exactly as it is on the usps website) If you fail to update your U.S. address, you are at risk of losing your lawful status in the U.S.
