Optional Practical Training reporting requirements

OPT updates and the SEVP Portal

While on Optional Practical Training (OPT), you must continue to update your SEVP Portal in order to maintain your F-1 visa status.

Common events that require you to submit an OPT update include:

  1. Moving to a new address
  2. Starting a new job
  3. Leaving a job
  4. Change of visa status or leaving the U.S.
  5. Change of legal name

For any of these updates, you need to have an active SEVP Portal.

The SEVP Portal

The SEVP Portal is an important tool that lets F-1 students on OPT meet their legal reporting requirements. There is no cost to access the SEVP portal. More information on the SEVP Portal can be found on Study in the State's SEVP overview video.

The SEVP Portal will allow you to:

  • View details about your OPT
  • Report changes to your address, telephone, and employer information
  • View and update data on all your employers in one place

Important Note

Failure to report your information could result in the automatic termination of your I-20 SEVIS record by the Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) without warning. If your I-20 SEVIS record is terminated while you are still in the U.S., you may begin to accrue days of unlawful presence.

You should keep proof of employment for your permanent records.

How do I set up my SEVP Portal?

  1. Once your OPT request is approved, and OPT begins, you will receive an email with instructions on how to create your SEVP Portal account.
    1. You can recognize the SEVP email by the sender and subject line:
      Sender: "do-not-reply.SEVP@ice.dhs.gov"
Subject line: Optional Practical Training Approval – the next step. Create an SEVP Portal account
  2. Click the link in the email and the “Register” page in the SEVP Portal registration process will open. You can only use the link once and it is only good for 14 days. The day the email is sent counts as the first day.
  3. Enter your SEVIS ID. (If you enter this incorrectly three times you will be locked out.)
  4. Click “Submit”
  5. Make a Password
    1. SEVP Portal Password Tips Sheet
  6. You will need to enter your password in twice and click “Create Account”

For more information, check out the Study in the States create a portal account video.

The SEVP Portal will only send emails related to your portal account and these emails will always come from "do-not-reply.SEVP@ice.dhs.gov."

If you do not receive the email to create your SEVP Portal account, please email international.studentservices@metrostate.edu

You cannot change your email address in the SEVP Portal. If your email address changes, you must email your new email address to international.studentservices@metrostate.edu so we can enter it in SEVIS. The new email address will be automatically sent to the portal.

Then, the portal will send you an email to verify your email address. You must click on the link in the email to complete the verification and have the email address updated in your profile.

For more information, Study in the States has a changing your email in the SEVP video.

You can only use the link to create your account once. If you are unable to start the registration process using the link provided in the email, please email international.studentservices@metrostate.edu.

The SEVP portal will lock your account after three failed attempts to log in to the SEVP Portal. Please use the "Reset Password" option on the login screen before contacting a DSO to unlock. If you still need assistance after you attempt to reset your password, please email international.studentservices@metrostate.edu.

More information can be found on the Study in the States video.

Note: A new I-20 is not automatically printed every time you make changes to your SEVP Portal. If you would like an updated I-20 or have plans to travel outside of the U.S. and need a new travel signature to re-enter, please email international.studentservices@metrostate.edu.

Managing your SEVP Portal

After you click “Create Account” the portal will open the login page and display a success message. This signifies that you have successfully created a SEVP Portal account and can now:

You must log in to the SEVP Portal to update your profile information. By default, after accepting the attestation, the portal opens to the Edit Profile page. The information on this page displays the data as it is captured in your SEVIS record and includes four parts:

  1. Read-only biographic information (This section displays your name and date of birth as they are in SEVIS)
    1. SEVP Portal users cannot edit these fields. Please email international.studentservices@metrostate.edu if your name or date of birth is incorrect.
  2. Editable physical address (This section displays the address where you live)
    • Be sure to validate that you have the correct address by entering your address in the USPS verification site
    • SEVP Portal users can edit this information:

Click the plus (+) sign next to the employment authorization listing. The portal reveals the employers linked to the authorization. Click “Delete.” The portal deletes the employer right away. The employer is removed from the employer count and from the list.
    2. You should ensure you select the right employer to delete. The system will not ask you to confirm that they want to delete the employer.
